15 Puzzle: what to know before playing

Start 15 Puzzle by looking at the playing area and its controls. Arrange 1 to 15 in reading order with the empty square at the bottom right. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Check the rule that explains your first action. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

An idea for your next attempt

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Keep the objective visible.

The goal to keep in mind

Arrange 1 to 15 in reading order with the empty square at the bottom right. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Take a moment to understand the current position.

The order of play

  1. Select a tile directly beside the empty square.
  2. The tile slides into the gap; diagonal moves are not allowed.
  3. Use Undo to step back one move.
  4. Finish the ordered board, or choose New puzzle.

Keyboard and screen controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Use the visible help when you are unsure of the next input.

See how the rules apply

When the gap is in the last square, only the tile above it and the tile to its left can move into it. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Verify the rule before continuing.

A common point of confusion

A distant tile cannot jump across other tiles. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow.
