Something to practise
Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention. Keep the objective visible.
Your objective
Fill every open square so the intersecting Across and Down answers match their clues. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Review the board or playing area as it changes.
The order of play
- Choose a numbered Across or Down clue to highlight its answer.
- Select a square and type a letter, or use the on-screen alphabet.
- Shared letters belong to both crossing answers. Selecting a shared square twice changes direction.
- Use Check entries to review entered letters. Reveal selected supplies one letter and counts as help.
- Complete every open square to solve the puzzle. Dark squares are not filled.
The controls to know
Select a clue or square. Use your physical keyboard or the on-screen letters, Erase, Check entries and Reveal selected. Scroll within the board on a narrow screen. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Avoid pressing the same control repeatedly while a move is being processed.
Work through an example
For the clue “A very high natural elevation of land”, the answer is MOUNTAIN. It occupies 8 squares, and each crossing uses the same letter. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Look for the relevant detail.
Where a round can go wrong
Do not fill dark squares. A letter that fits one answer must also fit the crossing clue. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart.
